Are you thinking about taking up running?

Running is one of the healthiest things you can do for your body. It can improve your mood, your cardiovascular health, and your sleep patterns. It can also help you maintain a healthy weight and build strong bones.

In order to make the most out of your runs, you need to wear the right running clothes.

Check out this guide to learn what to wear running.

1. Running Shoes

Running shoes are perhaps the most important piece of running equipment. A good pair of shoes will prevent injuries, blisters, and muscle soreness. Here are some tips to keep in mind when buying running shoes:

  • Make sure there’s wiggle room- there should be about a thumb’s width of room between the front of the shoe and the end of your longest toe
  • There should be little to no slipping at the heel
  • Look for running shoes with a money-back guarantee so you can test them out before you buy
  • Make sure the shoes you buy are running specific
  • Try on before buying to ensure proper fit

Also, make sure you buy running shoes in a style and color that you enjoy. Having cool running shoes will motivate you to hit the pavement!

2. Running Shirt

In addition to a great pair of running shoes, you also need a great running shirt. Now, there’s nothing wrong with throwing on a raggedy old t-shirt for your run. But, an old t-shirt isn’t going to allow for the best running experience.

A great running shirt will:

  • Protect you from the sun
  • Wick away moisture to keep you cool
  • Last longer than your basic tee

Here are some things to keep in mind when running/sun shirts for women and men:

  • Buy a shirt in each length- long, short, and sleeveless
  • Choose the right fabric- 100 percent polyester shirts provide the best breathability and moisture management
  • Avoid shirts made from 100 percent cotton, as these have the least amount of moisture management
  • Opt for shirts with reflective stripes if you plan to run in the dark

Also, if you’re in between sizes, it’s typically best to go a size up, as this will allow for the most breathability.

3. Running Shorts

If you’re planning to run in warm weather, then you’re going to need a few good pairs of running shorts.

Just like running shirts, you want your running shorts to be breathable and made from a moisture-wicking material. For extra comfortability, we also recommend buying shorts with lining. This way, you don’t have to wear uncomfortable underwear when running.

If you’re prone to chafing, then we suggest choosing liners that are short-length (aka, spandex liners). It’s also a good idea to wear shorts with drawstrings so you can better adjust them to fit your waist.

Many females nowadays also opt for to wear biker shorts for running shorts. Biker shorts make for great running shorts because they’re lightweight and prevent chafing.

Plus, many biker shorts come with side pockets that can hold your phone without it flopping around. If you like to listen to music when you run but don’t like holding your phone, this can be a huge bonus.

4. Running Leggings

Leggings (also known as running tights) are great for anyone who runs in cold weather, or for anyone who just wants a little more coverage for their legs. We suggest investing in some 3/4-length leggings for cooler weather, as well as some full-length leggings for winter/cold weather.

Just like shorts, you’ll want to look for leggings with breathability and moisture-wicking properties. These days, you can find running leggings geared toward different weather conditions, so make sure to check the tags when shopping.

While running leggings tend to be a bit expensive, especially the ones built for winter, they’re well worth the extra money.

5. Running/Sports Bra

If you’re a female runner, you’re also going to need a running/sports bra. Many running tank tops and t-shirts come with built-in sports bras. However, you may find that these built-in bras don’t offer enough support.

Plus, if you plan to run outside, it can be nice to have the option to take your top off and run in just your sports bra if the weather gets hot.

When choosing a running bra, you want to make sure that you select one that fits snugly, but isn’t too tight. For an optimal fit, you should be able to fit two fingers between the band and your body, but no more.

There are also sports bras specifically designed for cold weather running, so be sure to keep this in mind when shopping.

6. Running Socks

When buying running clothes, many people are tempted to skimp on the socks. After all, how much of a difference can your socks really make?

The answer is a lot! A good pair of running socks is just as important as a good pair of shoes. Like shoes, the right pair of running socks will also help prevent blisters and calluses.

When shopping for socks, make sure to buy ones that are a blend of synthetic fibers rather than ones made from 100 percent cotton. Also, if you’re prone to blisters and calluses, you may want to opt for a thicker pair of socks. Just be aware that thicker socks can affect the fit of your shoe, so it’s a good idea to try on socks with your running shoes before buying.

If you aren’t prone to blisters and want more breathability, you can opt for thinner pairs.
